Posible espectro de transmisión del exoplanet subneptano caliente TO-421 b. Un espectro de transmisión muestra la cantidad de luz estelar de diferentes longitudes de onda (colores) que está bloqueada por la atmósfera del planeta. Los investigadores usan modelos de computadora para predecir cómo se verá los espectros asumiendo ciertas condiciones atmosféricas plausibles, como la temperatura, la abundancia de diferentes gases y qué tipos de aerosoles están presentes. 

Esta simulación particular supone que Toi-421 B tiene una atmósfera rica en hidrógeno, carbono y oxígeno que está libre de nubes y neblina. El resumen de imágenes de infrarrojo cercano de Webb (NIRISS) y el espectrógrafo de infrarrojo cercano (NIRSPEC) permitirán identificar y medir fácilmente la abundancia de moléculas como el agua (H 2 o), metano (CH 4 ) y dióxido de carbono (co 2 ) en un atmósfera libre de anhelo libre. El espectro muestra picos prominentes que indican una abundancia de vapor de agua y dióxido de carbono, y cantidades menores de metano. Una vez que Webb observa el planeta, los investigadores compararán los datos reales con espectros simulados como este para determinar las condiciones reales del planeta.
